Nuclear Power: An Economical Option For Electricity Generation
Nuclear power generation is economically competitive in the power market of Pakistan.
The statistic of National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) of Pakistan shows
that during 2024-25, the average generation cost of nuclear generation has been Rs.18.5 per
unit. This cost is second lowest after the cost of WAPDA hydel generation. However, it is
important to mention that around 50% of WAPDA’s generation fleet have passed 30 years of
commercial operation and owe little investment cost. On the other hand, most of nuclear
generation fleet is in early phase of operation. Consequently, the WAPDA hydel generation
cost is significantly lower. Keeping this in view, one can conclude that nuclear energy is
one of the most competitive electricity generation option for Pakistan.
