Safe Energy
Nuclear power industry has evolved over the decades and nuclear reactors now being installed in the world are far superior
than their predecessor in term of performance and safety. Currently, Generation-III reactor technology is available for
construction and Pakistan’s K-2 & K-3 reactors, 1100 MWe each, are based upon the same technology. Relative to Generation-II,
design of Generation-III reactor is safer by virtue of its passive safety systems, that can safely shut-down without
external/internal supply of electricity.
Besides the development of reactor technology, regulations of the nuclear power industry are also evolving to improve and
incorporate lessons learned from experience feedback. In Pakistan, these regulations are implemented through independent national
regulator, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA). In addition, Periodic Safety Reviews by PAEC experts and international
peers of nuclear industry along with regular national and international refresher courses have enabled PAEC to strive for excellence
in nuclear safety beyond regulatory construct.
