  • Safe Energy

Nuclear power industry is evolving over the decades to enhance its performance and operational safety. Currently, Generation-III reactor technology is available for construction and Pakistan’s K-2 & K-3 reactors, 1145 MWe each, are based upon the same technology. Relative to Generation-II reactor designs, Generation-III reactor design is more safe by virtue of passive safety systems, that can safely shut-down nuclear reactor without external/internal supply of electricity. In addition, the construction of double containment enhances K-2 & K-3 plants safety against external projectile.

Besides the development of the reactor technology, the regulations of the nuclear power industry are also evolving to improve and incorporate lessons learned from any event. In Pakistan, these regulations are implemented through independent national regulator, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA). In addition, Periodic Safety Reviews are done by PAEC experts and international peers of nuclear industry. Also, periodic refreshing courses are organized by PAEC to promote and assure safety culture at all levels.
